Fire-Rated Noticeboards:
What Schools Need to Know
Understanding BS476 fire ratings, Class 0 and Class 1 compliance, and how to choose the right noticeboards for corridors, escape routes and public spaces in UK schools.
If you're responsible for purchasing display boards for a UK school, fire safety compliance isn't optional — it's a legal requirement. The wrong noticeboard in the wrong location can represent a serious fire risk, and in a building full of children, that's not a risk worth taking.
This guide explains everything you need to know about fire ratings for school noticeboards, which standards apply, where compliance is mandatory, and how to choose the right board for every area of your school.
Why Fire Safety Matters for Noticeboards
Noticeboards are found throughout schools — in corridors, classrooms, reception areas, stairwells and escape routes. In a fire, display boards and their contents can contribute significantly to the spread of flames and smoke. This is why UK building regulations and fire safety legislation require that materials used in certain areas of public buildings — including schools — meet specific fire performance standards.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 places a legal duty on school headteachers and governing bodies to carry out fire risk assessments and ensure that all materials used in the building do not increase fire risk. Display boards are explicitly included in this assessment.
Important
Standard fabric-covered noticeboards without a fire-retardant core are not suitable for use in school corridors or escape routes. Using non-compliant boards in these areas could invalidate your school's fire risk assessment and insurance.
Understanding BS476: The UK Fire Standard
BS476 is the British Standard that governs the fire performance of building materials and structures. For noticeboards and display boards used in schools, the most relevant parts are:
BS476 Part 6 — Fire Propagation
This test measures how much a material contributes to the growth of a fire. A lower index score means the material contributes less to fire spread. Materials achieving a low index are classified as suitable for use in areas where fire propagation is a concern.
BS476 Part 7 — Surface Spread of Flame
This test classifies materials based on how quickly flames travel across their surface when exposed to a heat source. There are four classes:
| Class | Rating | Suitable for schools? |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | Very low spread of flame — the highest performance level | ✓ Yes — corridors & escape routes |
| Class 2 | Low spread of flame | ● Classrooms only |
| Class 3 | Medium spread of flame | ✗ Not recommended |
| Class 4 | Rapid spread of flame | ✗ Not suitable |
Class 0
Class 0 is not defined within BS476 itself but is referenced in the Building Regulations (Approved Document B). A material achieves Class 0 if it meets both BS476 Part 6 (index of performance not exceeding 12, with a sub-index not exceeding 6) and BS476 Part 7 Class 1. It represents the highest level of fire performance for surface materials in buildings.
Our FlameShield boards are BS476 Class 1 certified
All boards in our FlameShield range have been independently tested and certified to BS476 Class 1, making them fully compliant for use in corridors, escape routes and all public areas of UK schools.
Where Do You Need Fire-Rated Noticeboards?
The short answer: anywhere that forms part of a means of escape, or where materials could contribute to the spread of fire between rooms. In practice, this means:
- Corridors — BS476 Class 1 required in all escape route corridors
- Stairwells and landings — Class 1 required as part of protected escape routes
- Reception areas — Class 1 recommended as high-traffic public spaces
- Entrance halls and lobbies — Class 1 required where these form part of the escape route
- Classrooms — Class 1 strongly recommended; Class 2 may be acceptable depending on your fire risk assessment
- Staff rooms and offices — Class 1 recommended; check your specific fire risk assessment
Your school's fire risk assessment will specify the exact requirements for each area. If you're unsure, err on the side of caution and specify Class 1 boards throughout.
What Makes a Noticeboard Fire-Rated?
A genuine fire-rated noticeboard is not simply a standard board that has been sprayed with a fire-retardant coating. Properly certified boards are constructed with fire performance built into their core:
- Fire-retardant composite core — the board substrate itself is manufactured to resist ignition and limit fire spread
- Bonded fire-retardant textile surface — the felt covering is chemically treated and bonded, not simply glued
- Independent certification — genuine BS476 boards come with a test certificate from an accredited testing laboratory
- Aluminium framing — non-combustible frames contribute to overall fire performance
Watch out for misleading claims
Some suppliers claim boards are "fire retardant" without independent certification. Always ask for the BS476 test certificate before purchasing. A board that has simply been treated with a spray-on retardant will not meet the same standard as a purpose-built certified board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all noticeboards in a school need to be fire-rated?
Not necessarily, but it depends on your fire risk assessment. As a minimum, all boards in corridors, stairwells and escape routes must meet BS476 Class 1. Many schools choose to use fire-rated boards throughout for simplicity and to ensure full compliance.
Can I check whether my existing noticeboards are compliant?
The easiest way is to check whether the boards came with a BS476 test certificate. If you don't have one and can't obtain one from the original supplier, treat the boards as non-compliant and replace them with certified alternatives in any fire-sensitive areas.
Are lockable noticeboards also available in fire-rated versions?
Yes. Our lockable noticeboard range includes fire-rated options with BS476 certified felt interiors, making them suitable for use in corridors and reception areas where secure display is required.
Do you supply test certificates with fire-rated boards?
Yes. All boards in our FlameShield range are supplied with documentation confirming BS476 Class 1 certification. Contact our team if you need copies for your fire risk assessment records.
